The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) maintains more than 3,100 miles of sewers with more than 800,000 laterals. MSD, currently in its third year of a program to renew laterals, has historically used traditional excavation to repair the laterals that are in poor condition. Now, MSD uses trenchless technology methods to renew the laterals and install new clean-outs. MSD is responsible for the structural condition of the portion of the lateral that is located in the right of way (ROW). Under the current program, defective laterals are discovered by televising the lateral from the main sewer using a lateral launcher. These laterals are inspected for one of the following reasons: 1. A homeowner calls in for a sewer backup 2. Lateral is inspected under the cross bore program 3. During preventative maintenance.
