The evaluation of individual pipeline assets in a water transmission main generally has two goals: 1) condition assessment and 2) condition monitoring. Condition assessment determines the present condition of a piece of infrastructure based on future performance. In contrast, condition monitoring determines the rate of deterioration or change in the condition as a prioritization tool.rnFor example, the assessment of a pipe segment may show that the segment has a distress level of 10 percent.Yet, monitoring over the next six months may show the worrying sign that this distress level is actively increasing over that period.The value for assessment or monitoring of individual assets will result from using the most current and reliable inspection technologies. For water transmission mains, the inspection technology available to provide accurate, quantifiable condition data depends on the pipeline construction material.
