Sewer system assessment has been getting a great deal of attention due in large part to the aging of our infrastructure and because of the increased demands placed on these systems. One focus area is the loss of pipe integrity due to wall corrosion from the presence of sewer gases. Hydrogen sulfide, one of the main culprits in pipe corrosion, can be present in sewer atmospheres and reacts with bacteria on the moist pipe wall surface forming sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid can deteriorate several materials including the concrete structure of the pipe, as well as the steel reinforcements. Understanding why corrosion occurs is one part of the puzzle. The other pieces have to do with the location and extent of the corrosion, as well as the amount and rate that corrosion occurs within the structure.To understand these issues, the City of Fort Worth, Texas, along with Malcolm Pirnie Inc., decided to investigate the feasibility of advanced inspection techniques through a pilot project with RedZone Robotics.
