Holland Charter Township — one of the fastest growing communities in Holland, Mich. — conducted a routine video sewer inspection that revealed serious problems with its sewer system. The system, which was originally installed in the 1970s, had deteriorated so severely that officials were worried that it may collapse. The deterioration was the effect of sulfuric acid, a typical by-product of wastewater in a sewer environment. Simply put: It destroys concrete. Both mainlines and manholes experienced corrosion to the point that, in some locations, the concrete's steel reinforcing mesh was exposed.
