Process plants and manufacturing operations are often kept at the correct, operating pressure using piston accumulators. These components comprise a tubular shell with a floating piston whose position is determined by the hydraulic system's fluid pressure on one side and a compressed inert gas precharge on the other. Movement of the piston allows the accumulator to either store energy, in the form of fluid under pressure, or discharge fluid back into the system to supplement or maintain system pressure.
