During the Second World War, scientists observed that then armour plates were pierced at sufficiently high velocity, the resulting hole was clean with little distortion to the surrounding material. Such localised softening was referred to as "adiabatic softening" and defines the condition whereby extreme energy (i.e. the piercing missile) is concentrated in time and space with no heat loss to the surroundings.
