Four-row, sealed, tapered roller bearings (Photo 1) - used on the roll necks of rolling mills - are subject to high loading, extreme shock loads and water/scale ingress. Despite this mechanical and environmental stress, they are expected to operate faultlessly for a long service life. Of the conditions listed above, water and scale ingress is potentially the most detrimental to bearing life, as such attack reduces lubricity and therefore operational effectiveness.
