"German machinery and plant is highly requested worldwide: with more than 20,000 different types of machinery, German manufacturers have the right answer for whatever requirements. The product range includes custom made machines for the most diverse applications, as well as many now-classic standard machines. Many manufacturers are leading specialists in their field internationally, so it is little wonder that the machinery manufacturing industry is the largest exporting s.ector in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1998, the value of machine exports was approximately Euro 84-4 billion, which is more than 60% of the country's total turnover of Euro 135 billion. Although most of the German machinery and plant manufacturers are small and medium-sized companies with no more than 160 employees on average, it is no longer Germany or Europe but the world that is their home market. Specialised areas such as power machinery, woodworking machines, food and packaging machines and printing and paper machinery enjoy an export quota of more than 70%: other areas such as textile machinery total nearly 90%.
