Today, Mig welding is a mature technology. Proprietary hardware capability is well advanced over all but the most complex user applications. Consumables technology has kept pace and the reliability of both solid and cored wires is very high. Developments in both fields have thus combined to de-skill routine welding operations to a degree that makes MIG the first choice where rapid, high quality welds are required. Compared with manual metal arc (MMA) welding which requires the welder to maintain electrode to workpiece distance for the arc to work at optimum efficiency, MIG does so automatically once the wire feed is set. The continuity of the process can also increase productivity, particularly when long runs are needed. Fume generation with solid wire is much lower than with flux-coated electrodes, and wire is immune to moisture absorption. This can seriously compro-mise MMA weld performance in some situations, necessitating costly storage and redrying measures.
