In view of the importance of weight saving for cars, chassis and body play a key role. The following paper details the realisation of an aluminium rear axle for the BMW 5-series car and a proposal helping towards optimising the concept for a new type of aluminium space frame developed by Volvo. The start of production of the BMW 5-series aluminium rear axle (see figure 1) was in August, 1995. It is based on a tube which is manipulated by an interior high pressure (known as hydroforming). The axle was initially developed in steel by BMW and a supplier of steel axles and was in the process of being completed before the change to aluminium was made.
