In the world of low carbon or mild steel tube production where mill speeds are often measured in hundreds of feet per minute, weld speed is usually not the limiting factor for tube production. Generally, maximum production speed is limited by the cutoff equipment's capacity or by the exit tube handling equipment. However, in the world of stainless steel tube production where maximum Tig (tungsten inert gas) welding speeds are measured in tens of feet or even in inches per minute, the maximum capability of the line generally focuses around the welder's capability. For example, imagine if it were possible to increase the welding speed by a single foot per minute (FPM) from 10 to 11 FPM. This speed increase would translate to a 10% increase in production. This article will discuss the advantages of tricathode Tig welding over single torch Tig welding, together with the other areas that need to be considered when choosing a tricathode system.
