Ultrasonic wall thickness measurement of tubes is based on transit time of an ultrasonic pulse between the front and back surface. In a typical case there is an echo train consisting of several back wall echoes. For the highest accuracy, the time interval is measured between the first and second back wall echoes. When the amplitude of the second back echo changes, the accuracy of the measurement is affected. In case it falls below the threshold level, no measurement is made. Considerable surface roughness may cause such an effect or when the tube is in motion during the measurement. In the case of a moving tube the distance between the tube and the transducer as well as its lateral position may vary. This variation causes changes in the amplitude of the echoes.
