I read with interest TG Brown's letter on repetitive strain injuries and his innovative idea of changing sonographers’ work position in Ultrasound 2011;19:178–179 (Repetitive strain injuries: would it help if sonographers could work facing across the couch and patient, instead of parallel to them?). Investigating the proportion of the sonographic workforce who are affected, as you suggest, would be a good start. As our populations are increasingly obese I wonder whether the manufacturers could design an automatically controlled mobile ‘robot arm’ which the sonographer could manipulate and control from a front-facing console. This would incorporate Tom Brown's novel suggestion and might also help in reducing repetitive strain injuries. Some of the principles used in robotic surgical instrumentation might be applicable to ultrasound machine design. Computer technology might well revolutionize sonography much as it has so many facets of modern life. Robotic surgery for example is done in 90% of prostate operations in the USA (Manolitsas T. Robotic surgery. O&G Magazine, 2012;14(1):25–27). In the airline business, the pilot is still the overseer but the computer does a lot of work more safely and efficiently than human hands and eyes. We could think of many examples where technology has changed work patterns with good outcomes. Let the debate begin!
