The ﬁrst edition of this two-volumeworkwas published in 1993nand was subtitled ‘Abdominal and General Ultrasound’. Theneditors were David Cosgrove, Hylton Meire and KeithnDewbury, assisted by Pat Farrant, who was promoted tonco-editor for the 2nd edition in 2001. It was a seminalnpublication which differed signiﬁcantly from any other multi-nauthor textbook of radiology in that every individualncontribution was scrupulously and unceremoniously editedn(whatever the status or reputation of the contributing author)nso that much of the text was re-written and re-organized. Allnillustrationswere labelledwith a standard systemof orientationndiagrams, and many scans were actually replaced by the edi-ntorial team in the interests of clarity – resulting in a hithertonunique uniformity of style and quality. The result was a worknthat deservedly became, and has remained, the standard refer-nence work for all who use ultrasound in their clinical practice,nnot only in the UK, but also worldwide.
