摘要

Tom’s comments are very timely since RSIs, or work-relatednupper limb disorders (WRULDs) seem to trouble a largenproportion of the ultrasound workforce. Various organiz-nations, research teams and individuals have investigatednthem and their relationship with sonography practice overnthe years and have offered numerous recommendations, nsome of which have been published in Ultrasound.nArguably, some of the problems highlighted by Tom cannbe solved by changing, when necessary, from a sitting to anstanding position to scan. Certainly, I automatically standnup when I can’t reach easily, and always have done so butncan this technique alone protect me from developingnWRULDs? Perhaps not. Maybe the time has come to inves-ntigate carefully the proportion of the workforce who remainnunaffected. What do we have in common? Are there distinctndifferences in our practice or are we just fit/lucky/or bornnwith the arms of a gibbon? Tom’s idea of changing comple-ntely the position in which sonographers work is radical, nnovel and definitely worth exploring, although problemsnwith scanning inpatient lists, where the patient remains innhis bed, will not be solved so easily by equipmentnchanges and floating table tops. Furthermore, as Tomnsuggests, what works for some practitioners may notnwork for all; for example, which way round do you donyour carotids and why? However, if this method benefitsnonly a small proportion of the workforce, then it is of enor-nmous value. Unless we try it out we simply won’t know.
