摘要

As sonographers we all know that, based on available data, nthere is presently no identified causal link between diagnosticnultrasound and adverse biological effects in humans, and it isngenerally accepted that the benefits far outweigh any theoreticalnrisks. However, we must accept that several decades ofnuse is not proof that ultrasound is completely innocuous. Thenpossibility exists that a future study may identify some adverseneffect, and it is with this in mind that organisations such asnBMUS, AIUM and WHO advise the prudent use of ultrasound, nthat it only be used for medical benefit and with minimalnexposure both in terms of time and machine settings: the AsnLow As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principle.
