It is difficult to write about the story of COMAP without telling something of my own personal journey. I hope you will forgive the memoir aspects of this piece. I received my Ph.D. in Mathematical Logic from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1967. I was, as they say, purer than the driven snow. The only "application" that I had seen was a ladder sliding down a wall-from teaching calculus. My first full-time job was as an instructor at Cornell University. As it happens, I became friends with a biochemist there. He went on to take a job at MIT working on a National Science Foundation (NSF) education program. When I moved to the University of Connecticut in 1970,1 visited him in Cambridge.
