In the United States, an unknown number of sewer system manholes are badly in need of rehabilitation. Corrosion damage to manhole structures is responsible for a significant amount of sewer systems' inflow and infiltration problems in the United States. Rehabilitation typically consists of rebuilding manholes with chemical grouts to stop infiltration and applications of cementitious mortar and polymer coatings to the manhole's walls, bench and inverts. Inserts are another option, but rebuilding with mortar, application of coatings, or a combination of the two, remain the most-used rehabilitation solutions.
