There is no doubt that safety and damage prevention have become hot topics in the utility construction industry in recent years, particularly for the underground segment of that market. The very nature of the work frequently means unknown dangers and risks. We've all read and heard about the serious accidents and even fatalities from explosions in homes and businesses, especially with the advent and growth of trenchless construction methods such as horizontal directional drilling (HDD) combined with the fiber construction boom. Most of these accidents have come when, unbeknownst to the operator, a sewer or water lateral has been pierced and crossed with another pipeline. The situation can quickly deteriorate into a variety of problems, but when one of the pipes contains natural gas, it is a disaster waiting to happen.
