One of the most frustrating problems a directional drilling crew can encounter is having a rig's drill string break or become stuck during drilling or pullback operations. Not only does work come to a halt, attempting to retrieve expensive drill pipe, downhole tools and product being installed can be time consuming, and the efforts are not always successful. Such problems are not unique to the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) industry - oil field drilling crews have "fished" for lost tools for years. While the causes of lost tools and stuck drill strings often are similar in both industries, solutions aren't necessarily the same.
