摘要

Underground and out of sight, the world's vital utility infrastructure is composed of uncounted miles of pipe, including iron pipe that has been buried for centuries. The earliest pipes were for transporting water. Water systems were being constructed as early as 2500 BC with the most advanced being in ancient Rome, where a system of 11 aqueducts covering 360 miles could deliver 50 million gallons of water a day to large storage cisterns. Pipes made of lead brought water from the cisterns to public fountains and baths. The Romans also developed faucets. At about 2000 BC, a palace on the island of Crete was equipped with pipes supplying drinking water.
