The London Convention 1972 and its 1996 London Protocol provide the specific global framework for the protection of the marine environment against pollution from dumping at sea, consistent with the overarching 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The LP builds on experience gained from the many years of operation of, and significantly improves, the LC. It is hoped that eventually the LP will replace the LC.rnThe LC has 82 states-parties as of 9 November 2007. The LP entered into force on 24 March 2006 and has 32 states-parties as of 9 November 2007. Six of these are not parties to the LC.
