Approximately a year ago, Michael Archuleta jokingly spoke his current position as the Hampton Roads Chapter President into existence. While serving as the chair of a steering group that was established to identify how to grow the unmanned systems business base in the Hampton Roads, Virginia, region, Archuleta realized that many of the recommendations being made could be implemented by the local Hampton Roads chapter. Jokingly, Archuleta, along with other members of the steering group, talked about joining the chapter - many of the members of the steering group were members of other chapters closer to where they had active contracts -running for office, and moving the chapter in the direction being recommended. This year, that comment turned into a reality for Archuleta. "In the 'be careful what you ask for' department, this year two of us from the steering group, myself and Carl Conti, became president and vice president of the chapter," Archuleta tells Unmanned Systems via email. As chapter president, Archuleta oversees a chapter in a region that includes the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Coast Guard, and NASA and 18 local municipalities that make up Hampton Roads. The chapter reaches from Northeast North Carolina, to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, to Richmond.
