In this issue of Unmanned Systems magazine, you will read about AUVSI's formal response to the FAA's Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for Remote Identification of UAS. In our comments, we emphasized the importance of remote ID to help drive public acceptance of UAS, answer legitimate security concerns raised by law enforcement and security agencies, and to help pave the way for expanded and more complex UAS operations. Since the remote ID rule could take months to finalize and years to implement, we encouraged the FAA to explore ways to incentivize voluntary use of remote ID prior to completion of a final rule. Such early adoption will help ease the transition to remote ID equipage and allow our industry to realize the many new services it will enable as quickly as possible.
