Boeing Co.'s Insitu unit and partner Hood Technology Corp. have come up with a novel way to launch and recover an unmanned aerial system from a vertical-takeoff-and-landing UAS. The idea is to make it easier to operate from confined spaces, like a forest clearing. Insitu's current method of launching its popular ScanEagle UAS is by rail. Recovery is by a wingtip hook that allows it to snag a line strung from a crane. A fair amount of room is required for both launch and recovery.
