More than 40 years ago, the eccentric genius author Martin Caidin penned a novel called "Cyborg," which explored the concept of creating artificial limbs for an injured astronaut that could be controlled by his brain. Within a couple of years after the book's 1972 release, moguls at the television networks in Hollywood produced two highly successful programs from that riff - "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "The Bionic Woman." Now, long after both shows ran their course and scores of other cyborgs have come and gone in the world of science fiction, the era of real bionic technology is dawning. Within a decade, persons who lost limbs or the use of limbs they have could be able to regain fine motor functions, either through artificial devices or the limbs themselves. They would control such motions instantaneously through the thought process.
