The Pentagon wants to spend about $3 billion to buy unmanned aerial systems in fiscal year 2016, an analysis of the new budget shows. The Defense Department's 2016 budget, released Feb. 2, continues funding of a number of UAS programs, especially those for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR. "Certainly over the past decade or so it's become apparent that there are significant advantages in having unmanned aircraft perform a range of missions, particularly if they have to do with persistent ISR and strike capabilities, and there doesn't seem to be any slackening of demand for that sort of capability," says one analyst who preferred to remain anonymous. So, he says, "you can probably expect that this is an area where [the Department of Defense] is going to continue procurements."
