"Ouch!" That's the thought most people with metal fillings, crowns or braces have when biting down on a piece of aluminum. But for robots in the far future, eating up a little of the soft metal might just power them onward. A team of researchers from Tsinghua University in Beijing created a liquid-metal shape-shifting robot straight out of "Terminator 2." The robot can "eat" a ball of aluminum five millimeters in diameter that causes the machine to move at five centimeters per second for more than an hour. "The soft machine looks rather intelligent and [can] deform itself according to the space it voyages in, just like Terminator does from the science-fiction film," says Tsinghua University's Jing Liu. "These unusual behaviors perfectly resemble the living organisms in nature."
