The tools have been in the U.S. Army inventory now for quite some time -30 years for the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and 13 years for the RQ-7 Shadow unmanned aerial vehicle. Introduced in 2009, the Gray Eagle Block 1 unmanned aerial vehicle is the relative newcomer. Iterations of each have proved their worth, particularly in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Remotely controlled or preprogrammed Shadows and Gray Eagles can identify threats that await around corners and over hills, keeping ground troops out of harm's way. Once targets are identified, Apaches can move in and deliver lethal blows to those threats.
