Unmanned aircraft systems have long proven stalwart in the support of military operations over the past decade, although international coverage of their utility has generally focused on negative aspects of their deployment associated with collateral damage in theaters of operation. However, the transfer of the same technology into civil applications, and especially environmental monitoring projects, has started to win back some much needed public support of the technology with so-called "eco-drones" now tentatively being developed to support a variety of concepts of operation.
