While aerial surveillance has long been a coveted tool for wildlife protection and other missions in Africa, limited budgets and infrastructure have often placed manned airplanes and even many unmanned aircraft out of reach. But the global proliferation of small unmanned aerial vehicles in recent years may finally give the continent the airborne technology it can afford and support. Efforts to bring these systems to Africa for civil uses are still in their early stages. But small UAS companies in the United States, Europe and elsewhere see significant potential, because their products are relatively low in price, do not require landing strips, and are easy to use and transport.
