Those two noises brought a glimmer of hope to those searching for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared without warning only a few hours into its flight on 8 March from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. The acoustics of those pulse signals narrowed down the potential search area for the Boeing 777 flight, which carried 239 people on board. And acoustics are playing a vital part in how experts are trying to find the downed aircraft. On 14 April, days after the first potential black box transmission was heard by Chinese hydrophones, the Royal Australian Navy's Ocean Shield defense vessel deployed with its Bluefin-21 autonomous underwater vehicle on board. Now the AUV is pointing its pulses in the opposite direction, seeking a hard return on the soft and deep Indian Ocean bottom.
