The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released an advanced notice of proposed rule-making and related research on vehicle-to-vehicle technology, preliminary steps that will lead to the eventual adoption of the safety system in all vehicles. The public has 60 days to comment on the advanced notice. A notice of proposed rulemaking on V2V is due for delivery in 2016. The research DOT has compiled indicates that incorporating V2V into left-turn assist and intersection movement assist maneuvers could prevent up to 592,000 crashes and 1,083 lives saved per year - a decrease in current incident numbers by half.
