Efforts to make significant advances in connected vehicle technology have stepped up a gear on both sides of the Atlantic.As a three-year, 6.4 million euro ($8.5 million) European vehicle platooning project concluded in September 2012, a $14.9 million road safety program to test wireless communications among vehicles and roadside equipment was getting under way in Michigan. The European project, known as Safe Road Trains for the Environment (Sartre), brought together academic and commercial stakeholders to take forward the concept of platooning — convoys of vehicles controlled wirelessly by a lead vehicle on public roads.
