Self-imposed Defense Department cost-saving measures last year and more than $40 billion in mandatory budget cuts imposed by sequestration this year are having an effect on unmanned systems spending in the Pentagon's fiscal 2014 budget request. The Air Force is cutting the number of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems reconnaissance and strike unmanned aircraft systems it wants to buy, and neither the Air Force nor the Navy have plans to acquire more of Northrop Grumman's high-altitude Global Hawk reconnaissance UAS or its maritime variant, the Triton, in fiscal 2014.
