An md4-1000 quadcopter from Germany's Microdrones recently crossed the Alps, flying from Switzerland to Italy, using the legendary Gotthard Pass between Hospental and Airolo. The system had to dodge power and telephone lines and a cable car and endure some stiff wind during its 25-minute, 12-kilometer (7.5-mile) flight. The md4-1000 navigated via a series of 18 waypoints that were meticulously mapped out months in advance.
