Small unmanned aircraft have moved from "techie toy" territory. With sophisticated miniaturized payloads, they are an increasingly marketable solution for a range of industries and services. From forestry and agricultural applications to law enforcement, these systems are proving cost effective and versatile. National regulatory authorities set the parameters for flying small UAS - typically in daylight, within visual line of sight and no more than 400 feet above ground level - as well as requirements for proving operational competence. However, establishing greater discipline and standardization within the industry, particularly in terms of aircraft and sensor operator training, could boost confidence in the safe and legitimate use of small UAS, observers say.
