The Iraq war officially drew to a close in mid-December, following a nine-year conflict that claimed the lives of an estimated nearly 25,000 coalition forces, contractors and Iraqi security forces. The war also saw a huge transition in the use of unmanned systems technology, particularly with the large threat of improvised explosive devices on the ground in Iraq.Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, prior head of the CIA, which used UAVs in the conflict, was reserved in his review of the effort when he spoke in Baghdad the day the war was declared over.
