General Dynamics will provide the Surface Mine Countermeasure Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (SMCM UUV) system for the U.S. Navy's Naval Sea Systems Command as part of an $87 million contract awarded in November. The contract calls for one engineering development model and five low-rate initial production systems if all options are exercised. The system will require a design that permits plug-and-play integration for mission modules on Littoral Combat Ships. The SMCM UUV will be based on subcontractor Bluefin Robotics' 21-inch UUVs and will include an advanced sonar payload developed by General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems.
