The supercommittee made up of U.S. House and Senate members has failed to create a budget deal, leaving open the possibility of stiff cuts across the board for both civilian and military budgets in 2013. Aviation Week's Ares blog says the $600 billion in automatic cuts that are supposed to be triggered by supercommittee failureplus the $450 billion in defense cuts already planned-would slash Pentagon discretionary spending by 23 percent across the board, a haircut that would likely lop out some unmanned systems despite their popularity.
