摘要

The expanding use of unmanned aerial systems in battle is providing deployed U.S. forces with a significant new offensive tool, particularly in collecting and viewing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). But the effectiveness of UAS has been limited by both geography and the slow rollout of network-centric technologies toward the tactical edge, which has created delays in communicating information from air vehicle to ground station to individual warfighters and back. New applications aimed at exploiting and distributing UAS video feeds, including ceding control of the UAS to the individual warf-ighter, are coming along to help overcome this problem. Using new wideband mesh networking technologies, the distribution of video feeds — along with the flight control of unmanned vehicles — can now be shifted to ground soldiers in the field by means of a network backbone, rather than to solely tactical operations center (TOC)-based personnel.
