Elbit Systems is investigating unattended ground sensors, dubbed Pearls of Wisdom, small technology that could lead to a big market. The company has set itself some very stringent standards: It wants small, ultra-low-power systems capable of conducting their own processing as well as relaying information back and forth and to a home station. Oh, and each sensor has to be cheap. The company sees a potentially large market for such sensors, says Oded Shoham, Pearls of Wisdom CEO, starting with homeland security. The sensor networks could be used for perimeter security "but it also works very well inside buildings." Industrial facilities, including in the United States, are interested in such uses, he says, and "a lot of money is there."
