摘要

On a visit to Afghanistan early in December, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced that 135 million British pounds (U.S. $209 million) was being spent "to double the number of Reaper remotely piloted aircraft." The announcement confirmed Ministry of Defence aspirations for an additional five RPAs, which had been under discussion during the previous year. Reaper RPAs have been supporting U.K. and Coalition Forces in Afghanistan since October 2007. The aircraft are flown by the 39 Squadron Royal Air Force via satellite from a U.K. facility within the U.S. Air Force's Creech Air Force Base, Nev. Reaper's primary role is intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, but since May 2008 the system has been capable of being armed with four AGM-114P Hellfire air-to-air surface missiles and two GBU-12 226-kilogram laser-guided bombs.
