Think smart" is the new NATO mantra which playets in Europe's UAV market appear to be taking to heart. As austerity measures prompted by the world economic downturn begin to bite deeply into European nations' defense budgets, there are signs that countries and companies on the continent are building stronger ties in order to see their way through to better times. Last November's treaty between the United Kingdom and France, which will see the two nations collaborate across a range of defense programs, including UAVs, could well prove to be a catalyst for change. Under that political agreement, the two countries will work together on the next generation of medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned air surveillance systems. The U.K. Ministry of Defence says, "Cooperation will enable the potential sharing of development, support, and training costs and ensure that our forces can work together".
