A hot breeze rippled the scattered prairie grass in the town of Arco, Idaho, on 17 July, 1955, as, at 12:01 p.m., its 982 citizens made history. In that moment, they became the first community whose lights flickered on powered by nuclear energy. It was a moment of triumph for the nuclear industry. The nation believed that nuclear fission was the future, a pollution-free answer to endless supplies of cheap electricity to satiate our glutinous energy hunger. Nuclear energy's actual path over the next 15 years offers a chilling reminder to the present-day unmanned systems industry.
