Long before there was the unmanned underwater vehicle Nereus - 50 years to be exact - there was Trieste. Although it was a manned submersible, when the Trieste ventured to the bottom of the Challenger Deep back in January 1960, it broke down ocean exploration barriers, making way for the following five decades that brought us such feats as exploring the wreckage of the RMS Titanic, new autonomous underwater vehicles capable of nearly endless hours of continuous remote exploration and even unmanned trips back down the Mariana Trench.
