David Novick is an engineer at Sandia National Laboratories, N.M., who has served as technical director for the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition since 2004 (he was a student competitor himself the first four years before that).rnAs the competition enters its 13th year, Novick says he's seen one major change: More teams arrive prepared now that the competition has become more difficult. In previous years, students were not required to have their vehicle pass successfully under the first underwater gate.
