If the automobile were invented today, there is a good chance it would not be allowed on public roads. The death and suffering caused by cars and trucks over the last century is comparable to the carnage of the world's wars. Even today, despite major improvements in vehicle and infrastructure safety, the annual global casualty rate is about one million deaths and 50 million injuries.
