Unmanned systems companies notched several notable contract wins in September, many of them from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). On 14 Sept., DARPA signed an agreement with Boeing to develop and fly its SolarEagle unmanned aircraft for the Vulture II demonstration program, which is aimed at developing an extreme long-duration air system. Under the $89 million contract, Boeing is to fly SolarEagle in 2014, staying aloft in the upper atmosphere for 30 days. The vehicle will harvest solar power during the day and store it in fuel cells to provide power during the night. Key suppliers for the work include Versa Power Systems and QinetiQ, which has experience flying its own long-dwell vehicle, the Zephyr.
