Charles Shepard was the driving force behind the organization and formation of the AUVSI Lone Star Chapter. He served as interim president of the chapter and conducted an organizational meeting at the University of Texas at Arlington on 11 Dec, 2006. Following this meeting, elections were held in January 2007 resulting in the installation of the original slate of officers. Shepard was elected president and continued to serve in that capacity until March 2009. At that time James E. Harris was elected and continues to serve as president. One of the chapter's founding members was Dr. Arthur Reyes of the University of Texas at Arlington, who was posthumously awarded the Academic Champion Award at AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2010.
